Coppola Praises Frankenstein: Del Toro Is a “Cinematic Genius”

According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, Francis Ford Coppola has praised his colleague Guillermo del Toro and the filmmaker’s new movie Frankenstein. The Godfather director celebrated the over-$100-million project made for Netflix in an Instagram post, calling del Toro a “cinematic genius.”
Writing about Frankenstein, Coppola says: “A unique and delightful work of art about love and beauty, crafted in the most personal and authentic way.” He describes del Toro as a “cinematic genius” and says it is a blessing that the Mexican filmmaker “brightens and illuminates our lives.”
He goes on to praise the “beautiful images” created by the film’s Danish cinematographer Dan Laustsen, as well as the “memorable performances” of Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth: “Like an unstoppable fountain of rapturous delight, moments of it overflow from them.”
The two-and-a-half-hour film, rated R, has reached 29 million “views” on Netflix, making it the fifth most-watched English-language film on the platform in 2025, and has turned Elordi into a contender for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
In 2021, Martin Scorsese praised del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, writing an article for the Los Angeles Times urging audiences to see it in theaters, in the way it was “meant” to be experienced.
